Fundraising Update

We have had a busy month in September with 5 skydiving events, 4 supporters running in events around the country, a 30 mile walk across the Royal Parks in London, a 100ft abseiling event in Derbyshire and a car boot sale run by one of our volunteers. Thank you for helping us to make a difference. We were also awarded a grant from Lush to help us continue the work that we do.

As part of our recent project, we neutered 69 animals, vaccinated 99 against debilitating but preventable diseases and provided veterinary treatment to 28 dogs and cats. Thank you for your support.

This is a picture of the dog in our last post that was rescued with a bottle stuck on her head. One of the puppies only has three legs and has needed veterinary treatment which has been funded as a result of your generous support.

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone in Kota Kinabalu who were involved in the rescue of a dog with 3 puppies who had a plastic container stuck on her head for several days. She is now safe and well and has been reunited with her family.

Many of you have asked about the black dog that we rescued in January following our images of her in a horrific condition in the back of a truck. She was taken for immediate veterinary treatment, along with another female and 2 puppies and has since gone on to have 2 beautiful puppies. All dogs are now receiving lots of care and attention from the local foster carer that we work with. Thank you for your support in helping us to give these animals a secure future.

A second chance

This beautiful pup was born from one of the dogs we helped to rescue as part of our last visit who was pregnant when we rescued her. Mum and pups are now being looked after by their foster carer, Catherine.

In April 2009 IAPWA was established to make a difference to the lives of dogs and cats in Sabah, Borneo. A year on, the charity has grown from 2 people to a team of 47 enthusiastic, dedicated animal lovers. Everyone in the team works on a voluntary basis to ensure that every penny of your donations goes directly to where it needs to be to help the lives of thousands of animals who need your support. Thank you to everyone who has joined our facebook group and to everyone we work with who are using their skills to do something amazing. Here's to a great 2nd year!!! x

Dr Dog in Malaysia

We have recently heard that Dr Dog has now made it's way to Malaysia. Dr Dog is an innovative animal therapy programme pioneered by Animals Asia Founder, Jill Robinson. The concept of animal therapy in Asia began with just one dog and a vision to promote animal welfare through people welfare. Dr. Max - a gentle golden giant - was allowed just one hour in the garden of the Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital in 1991....it was a visit that was to mark the start of a positive change in the public's perception of dogs and following in Max's healing paw prints, the Dr. Dog programme has grown quite literally in leaps and bounds! Over 300 'Canine Consultants', registered as official Animals Asia animal therapy dogs and teams of enthusiastic volunteers make regular visits to hospitals, disabled centres, homes for the young and elderly, orphanages and schools, spreading warmth and unconditional love to people in need in 6 countries across Asia. We will be meeting with Sabrina, the lady who has established this in Kuala Lumpur to see how this can be applied in Sabah.

I've just heard from the President of the SPCA KK who has confirmed that the current dog pound can shortly be converted into the first shelter in the country! This really is history in the making and we are so proud to be working with everyone involved in this project and would like to thank the City Hall for their support.

As part of our January trip we visited many animals whose lives have been transformed thanks to your donations and support. A lot of these animals lead a short and difficult existence and so we are working hard to provide as much support and protection as we can to those that are struggling to cope on the streets. We are also neutering many dogs and cats to deal with the overpopulation problem and funding veterinary treatment to those in need. Thank you to all of our supporters for helping to change their lives.

We are extremely pleased to have rescued 4 dogs from the dog catching unit last week. The 2 adults and 2 small puppies have received veterinary treatment and are now with a foster carer awaiting a new home.

IAPWA to review animal welfare laws

As part of our meeting with the Deputy Director of Veterinary Services and his team, IAPWA and SPCA KK discussed many issues, one of which related to the current laws in place to protect animals in the country. We have now been invited to review these laws and present a proposal for change. This is a massive leap forward and we hope to be able to share a successful outcome with you in the near future!

The Mayor supports IAPWA

As part of our schedule, we met with the Mayor of KK to discuss our ideas and highlight the problems facing the stray animals throughout the country. We also met with Danny Kok who manages the dog catching unit in KK and who has offered his support. As a result of the meeting, we will be working closely with the DBKK and aim to convert the current dog pound into a shelter for the stray animals. This is excellent news and we would like to thank everyone involved for their support. We will be keeping you up to date with all future developments.

SABAH'S STRAY ANIMALS ATTRACT INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION!

The International Aid for the Protection and Welfare of Animals (IAPWA), a non-profit organisation based in the United Kingdom, is looking forward to working closely with the Sabah government in dealing with stray animals. Its co-founder, Nicola Stevens said Sabah is popular for its wildlife conservation efforts which should also be extended to stray animals. “We have lots of people from the UK visiting Sabah and they tell us how beautiful Sabah was. But we do have those who bring back stories of poor conditions of dogs or cats they saw here' she told Bernama after meeting State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor here today. Stevens, who was accompanied by co-founder Lynsey Gill, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Kota Kinabalu (SPCAKK) President Iskandar Mohd Ali said IAPWA would be formulating the best practice template for Kota Kinabalu to follow which would then be duplicated by other district councils. “This will not be easy to do and we cannot implement something and see results overnight but we are delighted that the government acknowledges our concern and are willing to work with us in finding short-term and long-term solutions in dealing with the problem as well as providing financial assistance,” she said. Stevens and Gill were here to establish a network with the local government and other related bodies on the protection of animals in the state. Meanwhile, Hajiji welcomed IAPWA’s assistance and requested the organisation conduct a briefing with district council officers on how to deal with stray animals in a humane way. He said it was important that international bodies point out what was needed to be addressed in Sabah to minimise bad reporting of the state in other countries. — Bernama

A huge leap forward!

IAPWA Co-founders, Nicky and Lynsey, met with the State Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Hajiji Noor during their trip and presented their proposal for a humane solution in dealing with the stray animals. The meeting was extremely positive and Hajiji welcomed our assistance and requested that we conduct a briefing with all of the district council officers throughout Sabah on how to deal with stray animals in a humane way. He said it was important that international bodies point out what needed to be addressed in Sabah to minimise bad reporting of the state in other countries. Details of the meeting made front page news in the Daily Express which highlighted our aims and spread our message throughout the local community. We are in the process of organising the next set of meetings and will keep you updated with our progress.

WE HAVE LAND!!

We are so pleased to announce that we have received the legal documents for our land in Kota Kinabalu for the IAPWA Veterinary Clinic! We also have enough space to build kennel and cattery facilities for post operative care so as we can provide free treatment to the stray dogs and cats in the district. We will also use this as a base for our mobile clinics so as we can reach animals in remote areas and eventually expand this across other parts of Sabah. We would like to thank our local co-ordinator, Alex, for organising this and for all of his help and support.

Meeting with vets in KK

We were happy to meet with Dr Dennis Lim from The Century Medical Clinic (KK) as part of our trip to share ideas regarding the plight of stray animals. Dennis is a passionate advocate of animal welfare and we are proud to be linked to his work and were impressed with the conditions of his veterinary clinic. We also made courtesy calls with many other vets who we intend to work alongside, including Dr Edwin Bosi who is highly regarded for his work in wildlife conservation and has been involved in projects such as SOS Rhino and the orangutan conservation work at Sepilok. Over time, we will be inviting volunteer vets, nurses and animal behaviourists to join our programme and also offering animal lovers around the world the opportunity to work alongside our team to play a crucial role in the development of the project.

Tours in Sabah

The IAPWA team all love Sabah and have been fortunate to explore the vast beauty of the country many times. Many of you have contacted us to ask our advice about where to go in Borneo and so we were delighted to meet with Simon and Christine Amos from Fieldskills Ltd which was established after many years planning, running and leading expeditions. Simon has been working in remote locations as an explorer, expedition leader and medic for over fifteen years and has been consultant to World Challenge Expeditions UK for South American travel and designed and run over twenty jungle training courses for different organisations including Trekforce Expeditions UK. We will be working together over the coming months to design and implement some tours to highlight the beauty of Borneo and are proud to be working with such a great organisation!

Meeting the SPCA KK

An hour after arriving at Kota Kinabalu Airport, the IAPWA co-founders met with the SPCA Executive Committee to discuss their joint objectives and to address the complex set of problems facing the companion animals. They were joined during the meeting by 4 beautiful kittens that were abandoned in a shoe box shortly before they arrived. Unfortunately one of the kittens didn't make it through the night but the remaining 3 are now with a foster carer awaiting a new home and are making good progress. In the evening they were invited to visit some of the animals who are dependent on food provided by volunteers. The team are working closely with the SPCA KK to unite in a shared goal of ending animal cruelty
